A Missions Trip Opportunity!
Do you want an opportunity to invest your time, talent and treasure to serve the Lord? Make a lasting impact for the Kingdom of God? Do you agree with the Bible that serving Him reaps eternal reward and treasure in heaven? We are looking for those with a servant's heart and willing to endure the inconvenience of a rustic unimproved mountain youth camp. If you enjoy the outdoors where the animal and bugs live, than you will love this place! We are very rural and in the most beautiful (and remote) location in Colorado! We can't wait to see you here at Camp West!
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW.
What?
We're excited to be hosting this event at Camp West! For two days, we'll be working hard to further God's kingdom; no matter what trade or profession you are, we can find something for you to build or fix.
Where?
Deep in the beautiful solitude of the Gunnison National Forest is Camp West, a Christian summer camp and retreat center. For more specific instructions, we included a map below.
When?
Early arrival is Thursday, September 19th. We have opportunities to serve on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday. Come one day or all four!
EASY 1-2-3 BEST-PRACTICES:
- #1 Read the Welcome and Orientation Packet.
- #2 Keep a SAFE, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
- #3 Christ-centered fellowship is more important than accomplishing multiple projects. Simplify.
- Our motto this weekend: "Less is more". The goal is to do a small project with excellence (with Christ-centered-fellowship). We are not on a job-site with a crazy deadline.
- Will you be able to finish what you started? Yes? Then go for it!
- Not sure if you have the tools, supplies or materials? Hit the pause button. Do not proceed until there is a consensus that it will be finish before the day ends at dinner time.
- Plan for the clean up. We will put tools away, sweep, vacuum and empty the trash.
- Be sure not to 'bite of more than we can chew' by over-promising and under-delivering. It is better to under-promise and over-deliver, right?
- Property must be ready to re-occupy after the weekend construction is done.
- Days end at dinner (5:00PM). We are not going to overextend the work crew. Let's start cleanup around 4:00PM and enjoy the evenings.
- We can come back next Summer and Fall for another project, but for now, we want to get the property ready for a long, cold winter.
MEALS
What will we eat?
Commercial Kitchen
We have a commercial kitchen, refrigerators and freezers, and a gas powered barbecue available. Although we have a kitchen, we are without a cook (or any other staff for that matter). Please be self contained. Pack it in/ Pack it out/ Leave no trace!
We are eating 'potluck style'
Bring your favorite food...Pack everything you think you will need to eat while you are here. We will clean up after ourselves. If you are not on the construction team, consider helping in the kitchen. Please note that the trash and dishes will need to be done after each meal.
Bring something to share!
Jesus said it is more blessed to give than receive. Some people forget that. Not us! We'll be sharing food, so bring something for your friends. Just stop by the supermarket on your way. We will have a great time eating together!
LODGING
What are the accomodations at Camp West?
Bring a sleeping bag.
This is one level above camping, so come prepared with a sleeping bag. This is one step above tent camping! Dress warm. Bring your blankly and teddy bear! Be sure to be self-contained. Towels, toiletries, comforter, pillows, extras. Bring it. This is an empty cabin with a skinny mattress :-)
Bunk Beds
We have 9 small cabins at your disposal, but expect to be sharing a room and sleeping in a bunk. It's first come; first served. Take your pick. Some cabins are reserved, so read the signs and take note if they say "Occupied".
Bathhouses
Bathrooms will not be in the same building as the beds. They aren't far away, but keep that in mind. We use a septic system and leach field at Camp West, so be helpful be not flushing paper towels, etc. It is what it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
We don't have it. pray that it is provided in the future, but for now we are too remote - which isn't a bad thing, enjoy the digital detox!
The nearest town with a store, gas, etc is Paonia CO, approximately a 1-hour round trip from the camp, on the 133. So, make sure you bring everything you'll need!
The nearest hospital is in Delta, approximately a 1 hour drive from the camp. Medical first responders will take about that long to get here, so be careful, injuries should be avoided as much as is possible. For smaller emergencies, we will take you to a doctor's office in Paonia.
We follow a "Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out", "Leave no trace" Policy. This means that our campers bring everything that they need into the camp with them, and take any messes out with them. We ask that you respect God's property and keep this camp in good condition so we can cater to many, many more of His people. Bring your own child care! Animals should be left at home or at least keep them on a leash.
Absolutely! Bring basic tools, as well as any specialty tools related to your trade. Also, we don't have everything we need for all our projects, so anything you can bring is of great help. Drywall, Primer/ Screws/ Mud/ Tape, Screen Material, Lumber, Caulking, Roofing Tar, Painter's tape, Plumbing Supplies, Electrical Supplies, Construction Materials, etc. There are no local lumber stores. Don't think city. Think wilderness and a 4 hour round trip to a mini Ace Hardware.
