Chapter 8: The Centrality of Jesus Christ

Christ Our Wonderful Counselor
Every act of biblical counseling is, at its core, an introduction to the Wonderful Counselor Himself. Isaiah 9:6 proclaims, “And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Pastor Chuck Smith often said, “Jesus is the answer because He is the Counselor.” He understood that the goal of ministry is not to fix people but to bring them to Christ, who alone can heal the heart.
Pastor Bob Hoekstra shared that conviction: “Man’s greatest need is not better advice but a better life—and that life is Christ.” The Ministering Servant’s role is to bring the Disciple in Care face to face with the living Savior.
At the Calvary Chapel Fellowship of Biblical Counselors, we emphasize that Jesus Christ is not only the content of counseling but the method and means as well. He counsels through His Word, by His Spirit, in the context of His body, the church.
The Wonderful Counselor does not diagnose from a distance—He enters our pain. He took our griefs and carried our sorrows (Isaiah 53:4). He knows what it is to be tempted and yet never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). He comforts not with theory but with truth born of compassion.
Therefore, every Ministering Servant must point back to Him. We are not the healer; we are the messengers of the Healer. Our hope, our wisdom, our comfort, and our counsel all flow from Him.
“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Colossians 2:3
When the Disciple in Care learns to turn to Christ as Counselor, the heart begins to rest, the mind renews, and transformation unfolds. This is the essence of biblical counseling and the foundation of all ministry at CCFBC — Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).
